THE POWERS THAT BELicensed Psychologist |

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to discover you had special powers? What if you could become invisible at will, or create anything you want just by willing it, or talk to any animal in its own language? Such fantasies are probably pretty common. Powers like this would make us special and give us an edge, or so we imagine. But has it ever occurred to you that you already have unique powers that make you special? These are the powers that are so close to us and so seemingly ordinary that we don’t see them as powers at all. As a result, we don’t develop them or use them to their fullest capacity. How are you using your power of thought? Consciousness is no small thing, and developed and focused, this power can help us in every aspect of our lives. Do you have the power of common sense? How about the power to create beauty? This power is a gift you can give to yourself and others by putting it to work. You can probably think of many other powers—to give, to discern, to communicate, to make people laugh—each of us has our own combinations of powers. Perhaps our greatest power is the power to choose. We can choose to recognize and develop our abilities; we can choose our values; we can choose to live authentically and bravely; we can choose to run away. Just as it is with our other powers, often we don’t recognize this ability, and fail to develop and focus it. What’s keeping you from recognizing, developing and using your special, unique powers? Psychotherapy is a valid tool for exploring this question. A qualified psychotherapist who works with this focus can assist you in discovering your powers and those factors that interfere with, or enhance, your ability to use them to better your life. Magic powers are great for fantasies, but it is possible to find and develop your own powers for use in the real world. For more information about Dr. Peggy McCarthy, Licensed Psychologist,
